Summary0000112: DVB-T recording fails, adapter open errors in terminal window
DescriptionI have an USB TV stick with the RTL2832 chip. The utility w_scan scans this chip and comes up with a list of knows stations, so I guess it it OK. It reports using dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0 .

When I setup C-GG for DVB-T recording as per manual, start the scan for PAL EUROPE, if finds nothing. If I start cin from a terminal (under sudo or not) it shows errors:
AudioDevice::run_input: Success
DeviceDVBInput::open_dev: adaptor /dev/dvb/adapter0/ open failed

Note that it does not specify which device it fails to open. If I look in dev/dvb/adapter0/, I see 4 character devices: demux0, dvr0, frontend0, net0 . In the ¨scan confirm¨ window I set the frequency table, norm and input, but the input allows only ¨input0¨ . Could it be it tries to open that device in /dev/dvb/adapter0/ ?
I noticed that in source file devicedvbinput.C around line 120 there are the strings field, dvr, and demux.
Additional InformationIf you think this should be major instead of minor, please change. I set it to minor because I believe the main function of Cinelerra is video editing, and that is not affected by this.

Closing this issue with a final update for now as broadcast television in the United States is not the same as in Europe and elsewhere, apparently. The current Cinelerra DVB code was written using the DVB Adapter - Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 950Q usb adapter, specifically the linux version.

The Ezcap device we received appears to be the same as Mat's (fc0013) but it does not scan here in the United States. Our broadcast uses ATSC and after looking through a lot of variants of linux code, it does not appear that the RTL2832 chip in the Ezcap handles ATSC. Mat's dmesg contains refernces to rtl2832_sdr, which is an api that gives more direct control over the tuner. GG was able to tune to a local FM station and receive audio. It was pretty crude, but it did work. He was not able to use the resulting DVB stream. The signal status never indicated a signal lock. There is a PLL (phase locked loop) that centers on the band and there are signal strength and burst error rates that create a definite detect
state when the FEC (forward error correction) detects a low error rate.

So in summary, closing this issue as unable to fix AT THIS TIME. Things may, and actually always do, change - just ask Bob The Dinosaur.

1. The scan does not find any channels at all. Nothing appears in the scan list box or in the channel field of the monitor.
2. Using your file, I indeed get a selectable channel in the monitor and a list of channels in the scan window, but again a new scan does not find anything and the scan window becomes empty.
3. Using wireshark, I can see w_scan addressing the device (and getting blocks of 4K bulk data back when there is a signal), but Cinelerra does not, not at all. It is not addressing the device.

If you get such a device, following are my wireshark notes:

1. User must be member of wireshark group
2. usbmon cannot filter during capture. Only display filtering is available.
3. Use ¨lsusb¨ to see which bus id / device address it is. Try to have the device of interest as only device on that bus, e.g. not together with a mouse and/or keyboard.
4. In display filter, set ¨usb.bus_id == 1 and usb.device_address == 4¨, adapt 1 and 4 as required.

Does the channel list box display channels numbers that it did find? Is it obvious that the probe is succeeding? When you say it last scanned channel 69, was that included in the listbox? You MUST click OK for a file named "channel_xxx" where xxx is probably dvb to be created in $HOME/.bcast5. When/if you do get a channel file, make a copy of it somewhere else so you do not have to scan again.

We ordered from dealextreme the DVB USB receiver that may be close enough. It will be fun for gg to play with in any case! I looked at Features5 and the screenshots are pathetic. If time permits, which it probably will not, I will see if gg can make a sample of what we see.

1. I have a scan button when I use the 201812 release download (installed via the update manager). If I download that source (have not tried current git) and do a debug build, I don´t see a scan button.

2. I did hit the scan button of the 201812 release, but there was no new file appearing in the .bcast5 directory. Is that where the channel file should be? Are you sure the file should be created when you just hit the scan button?

3. If I start cin from a terminal, when scanning is in progress you see an increasing channel number plus failure, like:

set_channel 66
DeviceDVBInput::open_dev: adaptor /dev/dvb/adapter0 open failed

Eventually the scan finished with channel 69 (looks right for PAL UHF), and then there were still the original "open failed" errors after that . I don´t know if they ever stopped, because I couldn´t see movement, but you don´t see that if the terminal size is just right. And given that the scan shows the channel numbers OK, why is a channel file needed before any stations are found? I though such a file stored the actually found stations, like the w_scan output, and the PAL EUROPE definitions held the possible frequencies to look for stations.

4. Of course I have an antenna attached, and w_scan finds the local available channels.

Did you hit the "Scan" button? You have to click on the Scan button first which creates the channel table. But more importantly do you even see the "Scan" button? GG tested something here and there was no Scan button -- he is looking at that code right now.

In order to Scan, this must exist:
  1) an antenna ! for something to scan
  2) a set of frequencies that are available

We are going to try to find a similar device.

I have some more details. The error already occurs when I just bring up the record screen. Debugging shows that in devicedvbinput, line 251/252, it tries to get first the channel (which fails) and channel table (which also fails). But there is no channel yet in the video monitor field (I presume that is what get_channel() does, have not trace in there), and the channel table doesn't exist yet, so variable "ret" is set to 1 and the error reported, continuously.
Also, because both fail, there is no point in to keep calling this routine.

Is the Cinelerra channel table compatible with some other common dvb-t channel table. like vdr´s channel.conf . w_scan supports various formats, so maybe I can create a Cinelerra-compatible table, see if that fixes it.

The TV stick is an EZCAP EZTV688. But model numbers tend to vary. I bought it at dealextreme in 2012.
It looked like (not the same)

but this one has a different tuner inside. They all have a RTL2832U chip, but the tuner varies. Mine has an FC0013 according to dmesg, nowadays the better R820T is used. I bought it for SDR purposes, but have not looked at if there are any programming differences between the tuner chips.

I am slightly puzzled by the rtl2832_sdr entries. Could it be that software has claimed the device? I have no SDR software of any kind running.

GG is very interested in this! He says the "input" code does not really do anything except find the device which is what you see: "AudioDevice::run_input: Success" - he did not get any further in initially getting this particular section to work. However, we use this recording technique on our broadcast TV and use it 2-3 times a week. Of course, what we use is NTSC instead of Pal-Europe. But the stuff for Pal-Europe is there.

Do you have a model number for your USB TV stick? We would like to get the same one in order to test this.
