Summary0000018: MantisBT defaults to subscribing users to all updates on all (yes, ALL) issues
DescriptionHi, new user and second-time reporter here. ;-)

It seems that the default/current MantisBT configs are more tuned for use as an internal project bugtracker, where all of the users are members of the project team and involved in the development effort itself. I say that because, since submitting issue 0000011 earlier today, I've now received an email notification for every single action taken on MantisBT since then, including Sam's 0000016 and 0000017 test issues. You're not going to want to do that to your bug reporters. :-)
Steps To Reproduce1. Create an account here
2. (Possibly: Open an issue, to get added to the "reporter" group)
3. Wait for email updates about other, unrelated issues to start flowing in
Additional InformationI can certainly unselect all of the check boxes for email notifications in my account settings, but my worry then is that I won't receive the notifications I DO want to receive, about updates to my own issues. It's not clear whether there's a way to achieve the sensible default of "email me updates on MY OWN issues, but not unrelated ones".

Well, actually, maybe — but not on the user end.

The MantisBT Administrator's Guide § 7.4 Customizing MantisBT / Email Notifications

mantisbt.org/docs/master/en-US/Admin_Guide/html-desktop/#admin.customize.email

includes the following among its "example" configs:
========
I'm paranoid about mail. Only send information on issues to those involved in them. Don't send mail people already know about. Also send new issue notifications to managers so they can screen them.
$g_email_receive_own = OFF;
$g_default_notify_flags = array(
    'reporter' => ON,
    'handler' => ON,
    'monitor' => ON,
    'bugnotes' => ON,
    'category' => ON,
    'threshold_min' => NOBODY,
    'threshold_max' => NOBODY
);
$g_notify_flags['new'] = array(
    'threshold_min' => MANAGER,
    'threshold_max' => MANAGER,
);
========

They may call that "I'm paranoid about mail", but to me it sounds like the only sane configuration for email on a public bug tracker, at least by default.

If the problem should occur again unexpectedly, then simply report it. Then you get a bag of Gummi Bears for free ;-)

Not at all, these things happen. I just wanted to check on it since it seemed odd, but the explanation makes total sense.

Your call on leaving it open, but I don't think there's any need. The reason for the recent recurrence (...ouch) is fully understood and easily explained, and in the highly unlikely event it happens AGAIN I can always reopen the issue again. :-D Thanks!

Small changes to MantisBT caused the old settings to be inadvertently restored. I recognized this error and changed it so that only the authors of their own ticket are informed about changes via email. It shouldn't happen anymore. I will still leave your ticket open for a few days, just in case.
This bug tracker is relatively new and we still have to refine it with the settings. Sorry for the inconvenience.

(Hmm, you can't add Notes to closed issues without reopening them first? That's kind of a bummer.)

I wanted to check whether this has perhaps been adjusted only very recently? I seem to have still been getting at least some email about activity on other bugs, as recently as two hours ago (Pierre's note 0000051 on issue 0000005, at 21:10) which was after the bug was reported fixed — but there's been other activity since 21:10 which I haven't been emailed about, so maybe it's stopped now.

The bug has been fixed, if you find any more issues, just report them. Thanks a lot!

Great, thanks!

On a somewhat-related issue, I just noticed that the email notifications all have a From: field of
  From: Mantis Bug Tracker <[email protected]>
which makes them very hard to filter on.

Something along the lines of the following would be helpful:
* From: [email protected]
* From: [email protected]
* From: [email protected]
etc.

Thank you for pointing that out.
Really funny, we made it that way because some users wanted it that way. But I have to agree with you that not every user likes it, I found another solution. Standard users will no longer be informed about changes made by others, but only about their own tickets. Users who want to be informed about everything will be moved to another group.

I will look at the other points tomorrow.

Aw, and the Notes (probably all of the text fields) don't accept emoji.

(As an aside, I'm also a little worried that the three sets of MantisBT docs are available at https://www.mantisbt.org/documentation.php are "Docs for Administrators", "Docs for Developers" (of MantisBT itself), and "Docs for Translators" (ditto), with no apparent documentation made available for "ordinary" users.

The only documentation made available from _within_ the MantisBT instance seems to be the link at the bottom of each page suggesting that users "Contact administrator for assistance".

That link, BTW, currently points to mailto:[email protected] so that probably needs changing.

Ugh, thanks for dropping the protocol part of that URL, cut-and-paste.
