I thought it was time to show you how I am using Cin. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x84vdat

Everything was done in Cin, although the score was produced, naturally, elsewhere. It was the first proper outing with my new camera and, for the first time, I went for look-in-camera rather than flat or log. It was shot in 2160p but finished and uploaded in 1080p. A few clips are from a GoPro.

@DeJay

For some reason I can not play it not even on my totally up-to-date android phone.  Do I have to "follow" or "login" first?

I have no idea Phyllis, afaik it has not happened to anyone before. I tested the link and it worked for me, it still does, although I notice it opens with the volume slider right down and the audio muted. I've fiddled with the settings, try this link instead https://dai.ly/x84vdat

If that doesn't work try this, https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/581205303, it's a test piece for a different camera and if it works I will try to put the other video on Vimeo too.

I tried to embed the video here, but the site wouldn't let me.

Thanks for your interest.

(I have no view problems)

My compliments. I like it very much:
Overlapping environmental sounds and music.
Sense of framing and composition.
Pleasant and descriptive editing with the right timings.

Did you always shoot freehand?

Thanks for your comments Andrea.

No, only some was handheld. Some as a test of the OIS but mainly where prudent, such as on board the boat, otherwise mainly on a monopod.

Did you know that Cin is the only Linux NLE that will properly handle 10-bit and full range footage? All the others work in 8-bit broadcast restricted range and introduce typical 8-bit problems like banding.

Unbelievable, I didn't know that! I did a test with Kdenlive and couldn't find any configurations for bit depth or color range. I have rendered 10-bit clips at the highest quality (ffv1, lossless) and the result is 8-bit. The handling of clips in timeline is also problematic.
We need to find a way to advertise this uniqueness of CinGG!

What I have found out is this:

Kdenlive can be made to recognise full range and 10-bit, clip by clip, but all the effects are 8-bit 16-235 as is rendering, it gets stretched back to 10-bit to render ProRes or DNxHR.

Shotcut recognises full range 10-bit on import, which will show up on the Waveform Monitor, but RGB Parade and Histogram clamp it to broadcast restricted and, as it also uses MLT, it is the same as Kdenlive. It is rumoured that MLT will soon be able to handle 10-bit, I wait with baited breath!

Flowblade is 8-bit. That's it! So is Openshot.

Olive was only 8-bit, we still await version 2 with no idea what it will handle as yet.

As far as I can ascertain, both Pitivi and LIVES are 8-bit only. I have not tested the proprietary offerings Lightworks and Resolve, but they are not truly Linux anyway.

I added it to the Introduction in the manual of "Innovative Features".

By way of an update, Kdenlive are beginning to try to make their manual more useful and I found this in there https://docs.kdenlive.org/en/glossary/useful_information/full_luma.html

Quote from Andrea: I have rendered 10-bit clips at the highest quality (ffv1, lossless) and the result is 8-bit.

The only way I know to guarantee 10-bit out is to render ProRes, because that is its minimum bit depth, with chroma subsampling 422. Fine if you don't mind setting every clip individually to full luma range (a PITA!) and not do any corrections at all, but not much use to someone who shoots either 10-bit 420 (X-T3) or 10-bit 422 (HC-X1500).

LONG LIVE CINELERRA_GG!

It's a bit early, but happy Christmas everyone 😀
