Summary0000081: Add a donation page to the website?
DescriptionI remember in the past donations were a bit of a "hot" topic in the other mailing list...and somewhere I read an interview where the project didn't need financial help, but rather code contributions (If I am mistaken let me know!) but cinelerra-cv.org has one so...

Why not adding a donation page to https://www.cinelerra-gg.org/? A the least to cover server costs or to buy a few pizzas? :D

On cinelerra-cv.org only bitcoins are specified but I would say add paypal too? Afaik you don't need a paypal account to donate.

I will also close this ticket temporarily until all pages have been translated. I have set the solution to "suspend" so that we have a reminder so that we can continue the work later.

@IgorBeg
I have not prepared any text at the moment. The donation page has no priority for me, because other things are more important to me like translating the website and finally finishing my Cinfinity theme. I will lower the priority of this ticket. At the moment everything is paid for, it will be enough if we take up this topic again in a few months and we have several translations of the website.

@Sam is it the text you are going to use on the website??

@PhyllisSmith Then maybe the best thing would be specify a brekdown of the costs? Like
Domain XX$
Server XX$
and so on, Some community driven projects do that. Once you reach the donation "limit" to cover the expenses you can either ask not to donate more til next year or use the excess money for something else (buying specific hardware for testing?).

The main purpose of this website is to promote video art by creating the appropriate tools. The tools include the video editing software, the website for the exchange of information, documentation, tutorials, etc. and an artist forum for free expression and exchange of ideas. This website is run by volunteers and friends. If we can at least cover the server costs, or if we can afford a pizza and a beer once a year, then I'm already satisfied. First and foremost it is just fun and the joy of working together with other people to create something beautiful for everyone.

The reason I do not like the idea of a Donate Page is because of history with past persons who incorrectly think anyone is getting paid for doing this voluntary work. However, the server, the domain names, and the non-Cinelerra packages installed usually have annual fees so that is a consideration.

@Sam great! some people don't like PayPal (and I can understand why lol) so I would add a few alternatives too.

A popular option for open source projects (apart from bitcoins and Paypal) seems to be Patreon, but it is only for recurring donations only so not the ideal at the moment.

Webmoney also seem a popular alternative to PayPal especially in eastern Europe/fomer soviet union.

Liberapay https://en.liberapay.com/ works similar to Patreon but it is open source and used by FLOSS projects...I never used it but it seems nice and FLOSS friendly so maybe it could be nice having.

Finally Monero, the 'really anonymous' bitcoin, it seems a cool project and If we have support for that we can also use it as a promotion tool in the monero community, "hey look we are Cinelerra we support Monero for our donations".

I think as long as the options you use are not complicated for the user to use, and for you to maintain (or expensive) they are worth being investigated.

"Some pizzas for the servers" is a great phrase :D

Thanks for the advice. This idea was also suggested by some other users in private emails. We will also consider that for the year 2019. We will still have to prepare some things for that, PayPal we also had in mind. Once the site is translated into several languages, we will adopt your suggestion because it will have a higher reach. I put your suggestion on the roadmap because it would be good for at least some pizzas for the servers. ;-)
