The Cinelerra Family Tree
Cinelerra is one of the longest-running free video editors. Several editions have grown out of the same root โ here is how they relate.
Why are there multiple branches of Cinelerra? The same reason there are multiple Linux desktop environments โ GNOME, KDE, Cinnamon. Different developers had different priorities and forked the code base to pursue them. Each branch has its own strengths.
A related project โ Lumiera
Lumiera is sometimes mentioned in the same breath as Cinelerra, but it is not a fork. The Lumiera authors were inspired by Cinelerra and started writing a new editor from scratch in GTK+. It is still pre-alpha and not yet a usable application โ mentioned here for completeness. More at lumiera.org.
The Cinelerra-CV Legacy
Cinelerra-CV played an important role in Linux video editing for nearly two decades. Active development has since converged on Cinelerra-GG, which grew out of CV. The CV knowledge base remains available: a community-maintained mirror at cinelerra-cv.wikidot.com preserves documentation and history, and the original source repositories are accessible as GitHub archives. The Cinelerra-GG community looks after the cinelerra-cv.org domain in that spirit โ as a bridge between the past and the active project.
All Cinelerra editions are GPL-3.0 and trace back to the same root. Tastes differ โ try whichever fits you. If you came from another Cinelerra in the past, GG is where the community is most active today, with the fastest release cadence and the broadest codec support.
